Hours later, the train limped into the next stop.
âAll out!â the stationmaster shouted again and again, waving a red flag.
âAll out?â Aunty repeated. âBut weâre nowhere near my station.â
They all hesitated, as if this was some type of trick. Then the stationmaster knocked on their window, making them all jump. âAll out! Now!â he repeated, then strode off to the next carriage.
They gathered their belongings and stepped down on to the platform.
The rain had stopped but the air felt laden with water just waiting to fall again. Cordelia shivered; glad sheâd put on several layers of clothes in readiness for the temperature in the north of Scotland.
âWhat is it? Whatâs happening?â she asked the stationmaster as he returned their way.
âTrackâs subsided because of the rain,â he said. âShould be fixed by the morning.â
Skinny took his fag out of his mouth. âYou gotta be kidding. Where are we supposed to sleep tonight then? Donât say a hotel âcos I ainât got no readies.â
By now there was a small crowd around the stationmaster all wondering the same thing. He looked at them as if they were a nuisance.
âYou can sleep in the waiting room,â he said, indicating behind him. âItâll be a bit of a squeeze, though. But if you go into the village youâll find somewhere.â
The two soldiers looked at each other. âCome on then, letâs make it to the waiting room.â
With that, they were off with a cheery goodbye.
Aunty stood clutching her quilted bag, looking lost. âOh, deary, deary me. I donât think my arthritis will stand a night in the cold on a hard floor.â She looked down at her feet. âI canât afford a hotel neither.â
Cordelia linked her arm through the elderly womanâs. âTell you what. Letâs go and find a room somewhere. Weâll get a twin room. Iâll pay. How does that sound? You can buy me a drink.â
Aunty looked at her as if she were a fairy waving a magic wand.
âAre you sure, dear? Thatâll cost a fair bit, a hotel room.â
Cordelia hitched her bag over her shoulder. âLucky Iâm made of money then,â she said with a laugh. âAre you able to walk if we need to find somewhere?â
Aunty nodded. âAs long as itâs not too far and not uphill.â She looked around. âThis looks okay, not too steep.â
The Yorkshire village was quaint, with cobbled streets and stone cottages. Small front gardens showed the remains of summer blooms, now cut back for the winter. There werenât many people around and it wasnât long until blackout time.
âLetâs try the Black Bull pub over there,â Cordelia said.
Mrs Smith hesitated. âI donât know what my Fred would say, me staying in a pub. Iâve hardly ever even been in one.â
Cordelia tugged at her arm. âYour Fred wouldnât want you sleeping on the streets like a tramp, would he? Letâs hope theyâve still got a room free.â
The pub smelled of beer and cigarettes and was dimly lit with oil lamps, their light reflected on the polished if battered wooden tables.
