Chapter Seven

Evan had spent the night but left early the next morning for the ranch. But he promised to see her that night at The Rock before her shift for dinner. He tried to take her to Earl’s diner for dinner, but it would be more efficient in her mind to eat at The Rock. Besides, she loved their burgers. For now, she had a day at the spa to work through, provided she could stop daydreaming.

“You seem preoccupied. Everything okay?”

“Yeah, just thinking.” Grace continued folding the towels, hiding her face in case it revealed anything.

“If you ever want to talk, just let me know. I might not be as good as Sierra or Cassidy, but I can be a good listener. And you’ve been a good friend to me. By the way, what are you doing for Christmas? Want to join us for dinner? My mom would love having you.”

Grace smiled. She’d met Julie’s mom a few times. She seemed friendly, as did most of Granite Junction, which was why she hadn’t moved on. She could feel like she was part of something as long as she was here. Yet, something always held her back. A worry that maybe she would get too close and they would get to know her and reject her. But they were slowly breaking down her barriers. She wanted to open up, especially to Evan, but she’d spent too much of her life guarding her heart. Could she chance it? Last night was a good start, at least with Evan.

“Thanks, Julie. I’ll keep it in mind.”

A brilliant smile crossed Julie's face, letting Grace believe Julie truly meant her offer. “Really? That would be great! I’ll let you know more details if you can make it.”

Julie regaled her with tales of her family and the special dishes her mom made, along with her aunts and cousins. What would it be like to grow up with a family like that? Grace felt the familiar longing well up inside her and for once, she didn’t feel that overwhelming sadness, only a hope that she might create a family for herself. Maybe she had a future in Granite Junction with Evan Jackson.
