CHAPTER 5

A Carousel of Emotions

"Yes!" I hissed, throwing my hands up in the air for Drew to give me a high five.

He grinned and returned it, both of us looking down at the perfectly painted carousel horse we had been working on for days.

Now, considering all we had been through so far, one might not have thought that painting one horse would be that big of a deal. But you would be wrong.

This particular horse was one of the oldest ones on the carousel, as well as being one of the first that grandpa had ever created. Some horses that old could never be used again, especially with how badly the carousel itself was decomposed. There was no way to tell until we restored it fully, and even then it was difficult to know until painted. There was a good chance that it would be too rotted to hold the paint, or that we might have messed up the colors and made it look completely different than it had originally been. After all, this particular horse had been made when I was a child, and paint colors might have changed since.

Instead, it was nearly perfect, as if the horse had danced out of my childhood memories.

Deciding that a high five wasn't enough of a celebration, I threw my arms around Drew, and froze. True, I was excited, but my body had gotten away from me, and if he pushed me away it was going to be so very awkward. I stayed where I was, afraid to step away from his warmth without giving him the chance to make the decision for himself. If he pushed me away, I would totally understand, but I inhaled the mellow scent of his soap and hoped that he wouldn't shove me away. I hadn’t realized just how much I had missed being held like this.

I needn't have worried about Drew pushing me away, though. His broad chest vibrated as he laughed, his big hands rubbing up and down my back. His chin was hard on the top of my head and I hummed softly. It had been a long time since I'd been held like this, but the last time, I was almost entirely sure it hadn't felt like this. It hadn't felt this... right.

“It looks amazing,” I said, pulling back enough to see the horse better, and Drew agreed.

Now it was time to load it up in the back of Drew’s truck and take it so that we could add it to the carousel. A bit of a challenge, but this wouldn’t be the first time we had done it. Seeing how far the carousel had come was proof of that.

We worked side by side without speaking, but it wasn't an awkward silence. Despite not knowing each other very long, we had spent nearly every waking moment together in order to get the carousel ready in time, and our teamwork was obvious with us working together.

There was an old foam mattress tossed in
