Logan shook Samuel’s hand before Samuel mounted his horse.

“Thanks for the advice. I’ll try to remember it, but Emma means the world to me, and I worry about her all the time. This just adds an extra worry,” Logan shared.

“You’ll get through it. I know you’ll worry; I did too. Try not to let Emma know how worried you are, and don’t hover too much. She knows when she needs to eat and rest,” Samuel assured a nervous Logan.

Samuel looked down the access road and added, “You have riders coming.”

“It’s Cookie and a stranger,” Logan said.

“He’s not a stranger. That’s Hitch, the man who saved Cookie from Leroy’s attempted abduction. I hope nothing’s wrong,” Samuel said.

Logan heard the front door open, and Emma walked out onto the porch. Emma waved at Cookie, and Cookie rode past the men to the porch, dismounted, and embraced Emma.

Hitch rode up to Samuel and Logan and said, “Good afternoon. George and his wife are at your house, Samuel. The lady is angry, and Cookie decided to leave before she saw her, but the woman came out to the barn and accosted her. She threatened both of us. Cookie came here to stay with Emma, and I was going to ask you, Logan, if you have room in your barn for me to stay until the lady leaves town. I have to stay in the area until the trial.”

Logan shook his head. “I hoped Gertrude would act like a lady one day, but I doubt that will ever happen. She’s been difficult since Emma was a small child. Cookie knows she’s always welcome here, and I have a lot of room in the barn, but I also have a comfortable bunkhouse. You are more than welcome to stay until Gertrude leaves town.”

“Thank you. I appreciate the kindness,” Hitch said.

Samuel shook his head. “I better get home. Gertrude usually isn’t too difficult when she’s around the children but since Cookie lives with us and Leroy is in trouble, she may give Rachel some difficulty.”

Logan and Hitch said their goodbyes to Samuel, and Logan said, “Come on, Hitch, I’ll show you the bunkhouse. The ladies look as if they are too busy to speak to us now.”
