School was different that day. Lila was called to Ms. Kettle’s desk. Ms. Kettle only called kids to her desk when they were in trouble, because Ms. Kettle went to students’ desks most of the time. You were only called to her desk when she didn’t want the other students to hear.

Lila stood very still in front of Ms. Kettle’s desk, while Ms. Kettle cast the No Noise spell.

“Lila, how are you feeling?” Ms. Kettle asked. Her starry night sweater glinted and gleamed as she moved.

“Right now, nervous. Have I done something wrong?”

“I noticed you’ve been sleepy this week, and today you fell asleep during math.” Ms. Kettle said.

Lila’s stomach flipped. Was she out long? She thought she had only dozed off for a minute. “Sorry, Ms. Kettle. I—” Lila bit her lip, trying to keep it from quivering.

Ms. Kettle patted her hand. “I only ask because I want to make sure that you’re feeling okay. I understand that your tenth birthday is tomorrow?”

Lila nodded and took a deep breath.“Yes, my birthday is tomorrow. It’s a big birthday, but I think I’m doing okay. I’ve just been having a hard time staying asleep. I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep until early morning.” Lila’s voice wavered and she knew tears were coming soon. She took a deep breath again, trying to force them down.

Ms. Kettle nodded. “This happens sometimes to witches coming into their powers. Sometimes their powers are strongest at certain times of day, or in your case it seems, night. I seem to recall your Grandmum mentioning that she had some of these same issues when she was coming into her powers. Maybe you should talk to her about it.” Ms. Kettle said, her tone warm and understanding. “Also, you might want to try taking naps. That is only if this sort of thing continues, though. Naps will help you keep the hours of sleep you need, even if you can’t get all of that sleep in one timeframe. I want you to succeed in this year’s standardized testing, which you know is coming up in March. Sleep is very important for that.”

Lila nodded again. She was surprised to hear that Grandmum had sleeping issues too. She always seemed to fall asleep anywhere, at any time. Why hadn’t her mom told her? Maybe she didn’t know?
