The next Monday, my Flora-Do List sends me to help out at La Paloma with some, quote, “shit Pilar never has time to get to.” Turns out, I specialize in that sort of work. I was a bit apprehensive about showing my face around the bakery after my Studio Marín episode. Considering Pili and I hadn’t directly discussed my involvement in the gossip overshare that outed her sister.

Yet I was ready on time, and only slightly nervous about riding into work with the bride-to-be. Straightaway I should’ve known that pragmatic Pilar would’ve reacted the way she did. Opening and shutting this lingering matter between us before we even reached the end of her street.

“Just making sure you wore your big-girl bloomers.” This, she offered while looking me over a bit too closely as I entered her turquoise Mini Cooper.

Only a Reyes woman could get away with checking out my arse. “I always do,” I said, clicking my seat belt. “Pink ones today. Extra posh just for you.”

“Bueno, chica.” Smiling, she backed out of the driveway. “From what I’ve seen—and I see everything, tú sabes—the staff has moved on to juicier victims.”

“That’s basically what your mum said.”

“Mmm. But should there be any trouble,” Pili noted, “I have no doubt that you’ll handle yourself. Just don’t break my bakery.”
