Chapter Ten

DOMINIC HATED LEAVING Albie. Hated leaving with so much still left to say; to apologise for. He’d been such an arse. Understandable maybe, but if he’d stopped and listened... not let his anger and heartache at Albie’s perceived betrayal get in the way, then it wouldn’t be so awkward between them.

But there was nothing he could do about it now.

The stakes had gotten higher and no longer was it only his life in immediate danger from the Timere Lucen. And it wasn’t simply because of his betrayal to their cause, but because Dominic represented everything that Vaughn wanted to destroy; living proof of the information he wanted to keep hidden: some dhampyres could impregnate vampires. Though Dominic still didn’t quite understand how.

He didn’t leave the mansion the same he’d entered, avoiding the library altogether and choosing instead another of the tunnels that came out at the university. Dominic emerged in a disused block of lecture theatres, safe in the knowledge that the cameras here didn’t work; hadn’t done since he begun his relationship with Albie. It gave him a safe place to pull his shit together before heading back to the safehouse and resuming his role as a disgruntled dhampyre dedicated to Vaughn’s cause.

He waited for the 0200 hours patrol to pass by, and then another ten minutes more unsure if the pair were wolves, humans or one of the hybrid pairs – human dog handlers, except their canine partners were in fact wolves. He’d watched them in action once, with Albie, finding it hilarious to see the wolves bristle every time their human counterpart whistled. Even funnier hearing them grumble when they were finally released out of the kennels their human handlers had dutifully placed them in.

Certain the coast was clear, he stepped out of the building quickly and strode through the campus and onto the main road leading away from it. With no need to disguise his route having gone to the university to scout out the entrance to the coven’s library, he returned to the safehouse quick. There would be no reason for anyone to suspect he’d diverted from his mission and tracked down Albie. His feet faltering, he cursed and glanced back toward the university realising he’d forgotten to warn Albie of the traitor in their midst. That someone within his own security forces was aiding Vaughn by leaking information. But he couldn’t turn back. Shoulders slumping, Dominic continued walking, hoping that Eden remembered to mention it.

The streets were quieter around the university with it not being the weekend and Dominic was thankful for it. He didn’t have to push his way through busy footpaths filled with drunken revellers or duck into the shadows to avoid the extra patrols of Silverdale Security and he arrived back at the safehouse before anyone else. He slumped onto the couch, head resting on the back of it as he closed his eyes and sighed. Dominic didn’t even bother opening them as the door of the safehouse opened, realising quick that it was Gregor.
