Act Two

The next day. Night.

The stage is unchanged, except for the lighting: bare, intense white beams. In the corner a small table has been added for the SECRETARY, a woman of no particular age or personality. She takes notes without looking up, without showing any interest in what she is writing.

Outside, the silhouette of a GUARD in uniform. Off to one side, figures of witnesses. Anyone who has had contact with the RABBI during the twenty-four hours leading up to the incident has been summoned. Now that the visitors from abroad are gone, the investigation can begin.

The INSPECTOR will conduct the interrogation with a friendly but nervous voice. From time to time he will consult in whispers with the high-ranking POLICE OFFICIAL who, seated in the background, will only rarely intervene.

The POLICE OFFICIAL, bald, with a deeply lined face, impassive, distant, chain-smoking, seems bored.

The RABBI seems older. Having performed his sacrificial act, he looks spent. Glassy-eyed, seemingly detached, he listens to the questions, and answers in a tired, resigned voice.

The mood is tense, oppressive.
