The rest of winter break passes in a blur of party poppers and junk food. I missed Noah most while watching the ball drop on New Year’s Eve in Amal’s apartment.

On our first day back at school I am so focused on his arrival later tonight that I don’t hear what Mrs. Sharma assigned for homework.

“We have to read the next chapter of The Age of Exploration and answer the six questions at the end.” Mazhar laughs. “Do you have Noah on the brain?”

I smirk as we reach my locker. “Like you don’t think about Amal all the time?”

I gather the other books I need for tonight’s homework, cram my knit wool hat over my hair, and button up my coat.

“I do think about her all the time,” Mazhar admits, “but I have not missed a homework assignment over it. At least not this year.”

“This is the first school day of the new year,” I say.

“My point still stands, Daisy!” Mazhar grins, walking us down the hall. “Come on. Amal is meeting us at the Madison Square Park Shake Shack.”

Immediately thoughts of Noah share brain space with a cheeseburger and chocolate custard shake, despite it being below freezing outside. At least it’s sunny today, so sitting in the park should be nice.

We’re almost to the front doors when Mazhar stops. “I forgot my AP Music Theory textbook.”

“Subconsciously?” I ask. The Harmonies of Advanced Music Theory is over eight hundred pages and hardcover. It’s kind of hard to forget. I’m surprised my copy hasn’t severed my spine.

“Perhaps.” Mazhar shrugs. “Wait for me outside, I’ll be right there.” He smiles at me and pivots on his heel while I hike up my backpack and push through the glass door.

“Hi, Daisy.” I blink against the winter sunlight and see that Noah is standing on the sidewalk, his hands in the pockets of his peacoat.

“You’re back already?” A blush that I’m positive has absolutely nothing to do with the cold spills across my cheeks. “I thought your flight landed tonight. Why didn’t you text me?”

“And ruin the surprise?”

We run toward each other. Noah easily scoops me up into his arms and spins us around.

“I’ve missed you,” I murmur, pressing my forehead against his.

“I’ve missed you, too.” He smiles before kissing me, his lips sweet and warm.

“Daisy, Noah!” Imani, a senior musical theater student, runs up to us, her braids bouncing on her backpack. “I didn’t get to tell you: Your performance at the concert was amazing! My little sister wants to play the cello now.”

“That’s awesome.” Noah smiles at her, his cheeks pink.

“Thanks, Imani.” I grin back at her, and she waves goodbye.

“Great!” Mazhar sings, joining us again. “You found each other.”

“Wait.” I take Noah’s hand in mine, leaning into his coat, needing to be as close as possible after being an ocean apart. “You knew! And you said nothing!”

“The Harmonies of Advanced Music Theory was in my backpack this whole time.” Mazhar winks at me, looking over at Noah. “Amal is excited to see you,” he adds as we head toward the subway station.
