I eat my bagel and scroll through Instagram looking at the latest posts on my feed from all the various art accounts that I follow. Iâve always gone back and forth about creating my own, but Iâm not sure Iâd be that good at marketing or branding myself and my art. I do have an eye for aesthetics, and my feed would definitely be on point, so maybe Iâll give it a go eventually. Itâll be another step toward expanding and putting myself and my art out there. My phone buzzes, and I click on the email notification that pops up, humming with the feeling that comes right before telling a secret.
I uploaded my first comic strip this morning, and Iâve been looking forward to reading the comments ever since it went up. I decided to chronicle how Bri, Farah, and I came together with You Truly Assumed. The style is much more animated than I usually do, and I used a lot more color this time around. But the comic strip is super bright and cute, and I really like how it turned out, so Iâm telling myself that thatâs what matters most. Sharing my artwork is like sharing secrets, each one lifting a tiny weight off my shoulders. Comics take more time, and I poured myself into the first one that was going to go up on You Truly Assumed because I wanted it to be well received. If Iâm going to put myself out there, I might as well put out my best self.
LynneR07: Though the writing and drawings are both well done, I think that the subject matter is unnecessarily polarized.
Well, no one asked what you thought, Lynne, did they?
Mimi_Reads: As a Muslim teen, I wanted to say how much I love reading YTA.
My insides warm, the comment wrapping me in a tight hug.
WillieK: Muslim hoes.
DJ_101: This blog isnât going to change anything. Complete waste of time. Donât know what dreams yâall have, but yâall might want to let those go.
I twist my lips and shrug, clicking on the next email notification. I may not have the thickest of skins, but itâs not like a super drunk Lullwood High student hasnât said that to my friends and me before. I sink farther into the beanbag chair, waiting for another email notification to load. I read the next comment: This blog is disgusting. The Muslim ban shouldâve stayed in place so you all could stay with all of the terrorist gangs since youâre all terrorists. This blog is run by Muslim n******.
I recoil at the last sentence, the words slapping me. Even though Bloggingly blocked the racial slur, the message still rings clear. I press Delete, but the sting still lingers on my skin. Though there were more positive comments today, the hateful ones still seem to be rising. It went from one hateful comment per post to three, to five, to twenty, to now forty-five. Maybe trolls have shared the blogâs URL among themselves since
