8:14 A.M.

Fea repeats herself.

As soon as I’m back on solid ground, Fea—in her original xolo dog form—whines at me.

“I’m sorry,” she says. “I think that was harder for you to watch than I expected.”

“It’s okay,” I say, and I wipe at my watery eyes. “I was just thinking about Antoine. And what it would be like if he wasn’t my friend anymore.”

Fea’s tail wags. “So you’ll tell him?”

I shake my head. “I really don’t know, Fea! What if that is the thing I’ll always regret? Maybe the Power of the Bees wanted me to see Maricela’s side of things, to show me that I’ll regret it if I tell Antoine I like him.”

“Well, that makes no sense at all, David Bravo!” says Fea defiantly. “What a convoluted means of getting to the point. What if I’d never taken you to my past at all? You never would have learned the truth.”

The second morning bell rings out, and I pull my phone out. It’s 8:15. Great. I’m going to be late!

“Fea, I have to go,” I say. “Please, I just need more time to think about this.”

“David Bravoooooo,” Fea sings out.

“I know, I know. I only live once, right?”

“You do. And do you see where I’m going with all this?”

I sigh. “You don’t want me to mess up like you did. Yes, I get that.”

“Soooooo, isn’t this what your heart wants? This would be like the greatest romance of all time!”

“I don’t actually know that I want that!” I say. “I mean . . . you were in love with Maricela. That’s clear.”

“You don’t need to be in love, David,” says Fea, jumping around. She barks a few times. “You just have to believe it might be possible with Antoine.”

It sounds nice, but . . . it’s kinda scary, isn’t it?

“Believe in possibility!” she says, and then she’s gone.

I rush into Mr. Bradshaw’s class a moment later, and he looks up from his desk and frowns. “Don’t be late again, Mr. Bravo,” he says as I hurry to my seat.

Gracie thankfully doesn’t turn her whole body away from me this time. She actually smiles, even though it’s a very short one. I give her one back but then wish I’d actually shown up early. Mom’s advice rings in my mind. I really need to try again with Gracie. Here’s someone who might be able to help me a little bit with what I’m going through.

Still, everything is so confusing. Mr. Bradshaw starts talking about the American electoral system, but my thoughts are lost in this predicament I’m facing. Fea was stuck in her regrets because she was afraid. But what if that was because of the time she lived in? I don’t know that much about history, but it clearly wasn’t easy to be a girl who liked other girls back then. But . . . am I a boy who likes other boys? Is that what’s going on with Antoine and me? Is that who I am?

God, why isn’t there a class about this kind of stuff?

I do my best to pay attention to Mr.
