Day 14

More New Acquaintances • Exploring Another City • An Unforgettable Evening

I woke up at 8:30 a.m.. This is the first time I’ve slept through the entire night since the invasion. I dozed with a smile on my face, thinking of everything that happened yesterday.

I told Attila about what we’ve been through in Kharkiv and how we ended up here.

Today, we want to explore our new surroundings. And, by the way, we’re staying almost in the city centre. The building we’re in has a curious layout. The front door of the flat opens on to a long balcony overlooking a small courtyard.

Attila took a few pictures of us just now. He’s a photographer.

The reporters introduced me to Delara and Tom – their colleagues from Channel 4 News – on the phone. We’re going to meet up. I can’t wait!

Time passed. I walked around the flat impatiently, looking forward to meeting them. And then, someone rang the buzzer. It was them. I hurried to let them in and immediately got lost! Eventually, after a few minutes, I found the front door. We introduced ourselves and I took them up to the flat. We started talking and I told them my story, starting from the very beginning. After a while, we were joined by the other Channel 4 News reporters. I went to let them in – I didn’t get lost this time – then recorded an interview. They are all are going on to Moldova, but we’re staying here with Delara and Tom. Oh well … Pity. I wished them a safe journey. I’m really going to miss them.

After they left, Granny and I decided to go for a walk down by the river. I grabbed a map and we set off. However, we weren’t quite sure how to get there. We asked a Hungarian girl but she spoke very little English. I explained everything to her using a translator app and she gave us directions, but we could barely understand her. Then, as we kept walking, we asked some other people, but they didn’t even look our way. This is some kind of discrimination!

We went for a wander around the park next to our flat instead. After our walk, we wanted to find a chemist. Thank God we met another girl who spoke English. She took us to the chemist, but it turned out to be a medical laboratory. She tried giving us new directions, but we couldn’t really make sense of them. I forgot to say that the sirens on ambulances, fire trucks and police cars here in Budapest are very loud. You could turn it down a little!

That’s when I got a call from Delara inviting us on river-boat tour to do some sightseeing. We were delighted! We didn’t hesitate to accept.
