The case was already complicated enough but there were still more twists in store for the men and women of Operation Thunder.

Just two days after the news conference, the Registrar of the High Court informed the Home Affairs Ministry that an injunction application had been filed by an elderly woman who claimed that some of the paintings and jewellery recovered at the Padang had been stolen from her family by a group of Japanese soldiers during the war.

The woman, Madam Sally Shen, 94, had seen the contractor’s pictures in the Zaobao newspaper and recognised one of her family’s paintings from among the loot found at the crime scene.

In her application to the High Court, she appealed that this and other paintings seized be placed in a climatically-controlled room until such time that the Court was able to rule on the issue of ownership.
