Chapter 38

Claire parked on the dark, tree-lined street corner and left the engine running.

“Do you know what you’re doing?” Talking to oneself was a sign of madness. Have I gone insane?

Claire snatched a sidelong glimpse at her destination as she drove by. Nicky Moretti’s mansion resembled the other residences of Berkley, the luxury Washington, DC neighborhood. The three-story brick edifice boasted Grecian columns and carved gables but also high walls and electric fencing. The owners flaunted their wealth but guarded their privacy. Unlike the other homes, the Moretti estate used cement barriers and armed guards to keep booby-trapped vehicles and snoopy neighbors away.

During the drive north, hurt had simmered in Claire’s chest. How could Rob take Felicity’s side after all she’d done to him? Did he honestly believe she had changed? Maybe Agent Massoud was right. Psychopaths didn’t change. They didn’t heal. They only got better at destroying others’ lives.

Claire sucked in a deep breath to calm her mind. She had to focus on the task ahead. Once she stepped behind those walls, she’d need her wits about her. Nicky Moretti was not in bed with Apex. He hadn’t killed his valuable asset, Tony Russo. The only way to unlock Alpha’s identity was to speak with Nicky Moretti, face-to-face. With luck, Moretti would provide the missing key and empower Claire to behead the snake. And she knew just how to convince him.

She checked the magazine of her Glock, killed the motor, and got out of the car.

Claire understood Rob’s opposition to her gutsy move, but she had no choice. She’d alerted the investigation to the existence of Apex. Alpha had a mole in the FBI. His wolves were already circling her, ready to pounce. If Claire didn’t expose Alpha soon, those wolves would silence her forever.

She crossed the street and headed for the gates of the Moretti mansion. A security guard blocked her path.

“Stop there, ma’am. This is private property.”

Thick body armor covered his torso. He held a semi-automatic rifle loosely in both hands.

Claire presented her FBI identity card. “Special Agent Claire Wolfe. I’m here to see Niccolo Moretti.”

The guard took her card. “Wait here, please.”

He retreated to the guard shack and spoke into a telephone. Claire counted four security cameras. Beyond the tall iron gates, a cobblestone driveway led through manicured gardens, all illuminated by floodlights. Without the expensive trappings, the mansion could be mistaken for a high-security prison.

The guard put down the phone and signaled her to be patient. Claire hoped she’d get her FBI card back. She didn’t want to explain to FBI security how Moretti had acquired her access card. Soon enough, a golf cart hummed along the driveway toward them. The driver was not Nicky Moretti but a henchman in a suit. A pedestrian gate buzzed open. The suit walked over to the guard, examined Claire’s card, and approached her.

“How may I help you, Special Agent Wolfe?”

He had a heavy New York accent and Mediterranean tan. His sarcastic tone implied they were playing a thinly disguised game that he happened to enjoy.
