It had happened when the boy had fainted and was still lying on the ground.

We were eating, or pretending to eat. The room was silent again except for the sounds of cutting and chewing, silverware scraping china.

But those weren’t the only sounds.

From time to time the professor and each member of his family made that funny little snort, the sound that Dell made, as his students knew, in class. The sound that, as only I knew, he made in bed.

The sound went around the table, in intervals, orchestrated. Like music. The professor and his wife and two children and Dell made that funny snort.

Professor Muller nodded, and I knew: it was something he had taught them to do.

A sound he’d conditioned them to make.

It is always a shock when something you thought was personal turns out to belong to a group. I was Dell’s experiment, and he was Professor Muller’s.
