When they came for him, he thought he must be dreaming.

Lately, Romford’s dreams had been as vivid as anything he had experienced when he had eaten the Host. He blamed the ache in his head. The ringing in his ears. The sounds of the Wolvenhuis that still found their way into his brain at all hours of the day and night. Foxlike screams of men fucking women. The leering banter and clatter of coin. The swish of Hircent’s birch.

So he assumed he was dreaming when, in the black of the night, strong hands touched his shoulders and shook him.

When a voice like Loveday’s whispered urgently in his ear.

You’re leaving.

You’re going home.

Romford actually laughed out loud. The idea of escaping the hell in which he lived was so impossible that even to hear it suggested seemed hilarious.

But there was Loveday’s voice again, the strong hand on the shoulder once more. And hope, floating to him through the dark.

You’re going home, lad. It’s over for you. Get up. Go with Scotsman. Do as he tells you. I’ll see you again one day. I… I’m sorry. It wasn’t meant…

A gruff clearing of the throat.

I’m sorry.

Romford shook his head. He sat up. Loveday moved away. Romford heard him a little further off, talking with the Scot.

You’re sure? Really sure?

Aye.

So this is goo—

Christ, Loveday. Don’t you fucking goodbye me.

As Romford felt around for his pack, he heard the sound of the two men embracing. There was barely anything to it. A few quick slaps on the back. Cleared throats. Then silence.
