Chapter 26

“Ruby, are you there?” I asked, clutching the phone.

“Nyssa,” a voice whispered on the other end, too quiet to make out if it was Ruby or not. “Help me.”

“Where are you?”

“Lynock sports field,” she whispered, desperation lacing her words. “Please hurry.”

“Are there other people there? Are you hurt?” I hurried into my room, opening the drawer filled with my potions. The streets might not be safe, but I wouldn’t go unprepared. “Ruby? I’ll bring help.” Rynac and Indra had raced off, but I’d call the MEA for backup. I couldn’t go out alone.

The line crackled. “If you notify the enforcers,” a hard voice said. “I’ll kill her.”

The call ended and I could only stare down at my phone. What in all the hells was going on? Who would take Ruby, and why did they want me? If they didn’t want the enforcers involved, then what could I do? If it meant Ruby’s life, I had to do something.

Stuffing my bag with as many potions as I could fit, I raced to the rooftop. “Danika?” I called out, hoping my fox was close by and not dealing with demonspawn.

“What’s wrong?” her voice said in my head, but I couldn’t see her. I explained to her about the call. “I’ll come with you.”

“Where are you?” I asked. I didn’t see any movement on the surrounding roofs.

“Out on the street,” she said. “I can hear you through our connection now. You must be growing stronger. Try thinking something to me.”

Can you hear me? I said in my mind, feeling foolish.

“Better to feel foolish than to look weird talking aloud to yourself,” she snickered.

Great, she could hear my thoughts. That would have been nice to know earlier. I shook my head and hurried back down to my room. I’d take sharing my embarrassing thoughts if it meant I could communicate with Danika at a distance.

I hesitated at the door to my room, then backpedaled to my drawers. I needed to be ready for anything, but worry knotted in my stomach. Swearing, I swiped up the enhancement potion and then grabbed the binding potion. While I hoped I didn’t need either of them, I wanted to be prepared.

Tucking them into the special pockets in my bag, I rushed out. Taking the steps two at a time, I found Danika waiting outside my building.

“Ready?” she asked.

“Nope. Let’s go.”

Goddess, I hated running. Why did I have to sweat so much? I’d need to start packing a spare top. My legs protested each stride as we ran towards the sports field. My lungs burned and at this rate I’d be useless once we got to Ruby.

Danika had taken the lead, her nose and senses more attuned to sensing demonspawn, but she had yet to find any. Which should’ve been a good thing. It wasn’t like Arkirith was crawling with the beasts, but it only added to the unease clinging to me like my sweaty top.

The sports field joined to the back of a high school.
