The principle inscription on Nemon’s sculpture Seated Sir Winston Churchill (Figure 6.10) reads: ‘This Statue was commissioned by the Corporation of London in 1955 as a tribute to the Greatest Statesmen of his Age and the Nation’s Leader in the Great War of 1939–1945.’ Beneath that is written: ‘The Rt Hon. Sir Winston Spencer-Churchill KG, OM CH, MP. Statesman.’

The statue had its genesis in Nemon reading in the London Evening Standard, early in December 1953, of a proposal by Sir George Elliston for a statue of Churchill to be erected inside the Guildhall. The next day, 2 December, the sculptor wrote to Sir George:
