‘Please, Henri. Do something. If you love me, you’ll find a way of marrying me sooner.’

Henri chewed his bottom lip. ‘I’ll find a way to earn more money and bring our marriage forward.’

‘Can’t we marry now? We could live with your sister.’

Henri stroked Desire’s damp cheeks. ‘Alas, that is not our solution. Adriana already carries the burden of caring for my parents, and she is expecting her second child. Her house is not large enough for us and our children too.’

Desire’s mood softened at the thought of bearing Henri’s children. ‘What are we to do?’

Henri smiled. ‘It’s summer. I can work late into the evenings and Sunday afternoons. We’ll have little or no time together, but it’s only temporary. With private commissions, I can save enough to set up a home perhaps as soon as two years from now.’

‘Pray that Master Brewer will release me from his service by then.’

Henri grinned. ‘If there’s a child in your belly he will. Let us walk by the canal. After today, opportunities for such pleasures will be rare.’
