“What use are you as a Teacher if you don’t know anything about Travelling?”

Brorda had been about to eat some of the pork that had been carved off the pig roasting in the pit. He paused, the bone in his hand dripping fatty juices.

They sat on a log at the edge of the clearing, which gave them some privacy for their conversation. Some of the Fey darted curious looks at him, but none approached. Which suited Thomas just fine.

“I can teach you the Rule,” Brorda replied. “You will need it to survive. And I will ask my kin, and other of the Seelie Fey, see if there be anyone else who might know of Travelling.” He frowned. “I seem to remember tales of a Traveller in the North, but that was a few years ago. I doubt he is still here. Travellers do not stay in one place too long. It is dangerous.”

“Dangerous?”

“To be too long in a time not your own. Or so I have heard.” He shrugged slightly. “I am a Ward. I do not know all of what the Rule says about Travellers.”

“A Ward? That’s some kind of a—” Thomas broke off, disoriented. The encounter with the king had left behind knowledge that he hadn’t had before. Knowledge like the Gifts of the Fey: Healing, Speaking, Travelling, Warding, and the Clan, and what they were.

A Ward could manipulate weather: call up fog or rain or snow or wind in a localized area. In general, they also had a special kinship with the green things: the trees, the forests, the plants. Similarly, those of the various Clans had special bonds with certain animal families, such as the Eagles or Wolves or Foxes or Badgers. All Fey shared all of the Gifts to some extent, but those who were Gifted in one area or another had deeper abilities reflecting their special Gift, or Gifts, for it was apparent that many of the Fey had more than one.

All of this had been part of Nectan’s knowledge, all of it lingering now, even though the contact between their minds had been severed. Not all of what he had acquired from Nectan was clear though; some were whispers only, passing glances at things he could barely comprehend.

Brorda opened his mouth to speak, but Thomas sensed the presence of another Fey behind him and he turned.

Nona flushed as their eyes met, but she lifted her chin.

Brorda eyed them, then rose and nodded at the Healer. “Good eve, my lady. You have words to speak that are not for me. I will leave you alone.” He looked at Thomas. “I will return later.”

“May I sit?” Nona asked as Brorda walked away.

Thomas shrugged. “I can’t stop you.”

She sat beside him, arranging her cloak underneath her. Despite his anger, he could not stop his reaction to her beauty, seeing her delicate brows arched over her clear green eyes. The faint scent of vanilla tickled his nostrils as the breeze shifted, blowing towards him.

She took a deep breath.
