CHAPTER 13

Luca

I leave Chloe standing by herself and enter the visitors’ center, and I know I’m making a mistake, but Cole ushers me into Charles Moore’s office, shutting the door.

“Drop the pants,” he instructs.

Lifting a brow, I glare at him. “Your bedside manner is usually much better than this. No, please, or dinner first; just drop your pants.”

I quickly realize that Cole is not in a joking mood, so I undo my belt and drop my jeans to my knees, falling heavily into the chair behind the desk, and it’s not fucking awkward at all.

While he examines my leg, my eyes are glued to the photographs on Mr. Moore’s desk. They depict Chloe dating back to when she was a baby and up to the present. She has that bright, carefree smile in every photograph, and her eyes are so full of life and happiness, regardless of her age.

“This looks good; Chloe did an excellent job of cleaning the wound, but just to be safe, I’m going to apply some more antiseptic cream to prevent any infection. You need to keep the wound clean, change the bandage regularly, and avoid touching the wound with dirty hands.”

I don’t answer him because, first, I’m not an animal, so my hands are clean, and second, my eyes are still glued to the photos of Chloe. If Cole notices that my attention is elsewhere while he pokes and prods at the cut on my thigh, he doesn’t point it out. After wrapping my thigh, he hands me some painkillers to help with the pain and swelling, and he reminds me to keep it clean and take it easy for a few days.

“We’re meeting in the conference room to begin sorting through everything,” Cole informs me as he leaves me to get dressed.

The door closes behind him, and I pick up one of the silver frames from the desk, staring at the photo of Chloe. She’s kneeling at the edge of the forest, bottle-feeding a baby deer. It’s so Chloe, always the animal lover, taking care of creatures big and small. I don’t want to meet in the conference room; I want to grab Chloe and run back to our cave. Is it normal to feel this way after only knowing someone for four days?

It was so easy to get lost in Chloe when we were alone in the cave. I think about the way she smiled and how the light from the fire danced in her eyes. I’ve been so cold and empty inside, but Chloe brought warmth and light into my life in just a few days. It’s like she awakened something in me that I didn’t even know was there.

Unfortunately, the moment was fleeting, and I was yanked back into the cold reality of life when Mason and the rest of the team showed up, and then Ezra made that comment about Chloe’s age and how she needed someone who wasn’t as... well, someone who wasn’t me. I began to overthink, and I wondered what the hell I was doing with Chloe, so I shut her out.
