Chapter Six

It had been a month since Jefferson had any contact with Cindy after their kiss at the hospital. He made sure to stay away from her, not wanting to have any issues with her stepbrother, his best friend. And in all of that time, he’d managed to convince himself that he’d made the right decision, and also built new walls to keep the woman out. But everything came crashing down the moment he set eyes on her, dressed in a deep purple bridesmaid dress, with a slit that ran up her legs, stopping mid-thigh.

She looked radiant and enchanting with the dress complementing her creamy skin, and her dark brown hair flowing down her back in soft curls. It didn’t help that she was wearing seven-inch heels that made her legs look like they went on forever. He’d had his eyes on her all day, right from when she walked down the aisle arm in arm with one of the groomsmen. They were attending the wedding ceremony of Ryan Hillman, Cheryl’s elder brother, whose bride was also Cindy’s best friend.

As the reception progressed, Jefferson couldn’t get his eyes off Cindy. He’d been discreetly staring at her from across the table, with Amon sitting beside him, and the woman, in turn, was doing a very good job of ignoring him as though she hadn’t noticed him all day. But then, deep down, he knew he deserved it for how he’d treated her after their return from the hospital.

More than once, she’d caught him shooting a death glare at the poor guy, who knew nothing of their silent fight. But she wasn’t ready to give up.

A month ago at the hospital, he’d made her feel he was worth it, but after giving her the cold shoulder, she’d quickly realized what they shared meant nothing to him, other than just another feather in his cap of the many women he’d been with. Of course, she was well aware of his reputation as a ladies’ man, but up until now, she’d given him the benefit of the doubt.

While she continued acting aloof to his presence, from the corner of her eye, she saw a woman approach him and drape her arms over his shoulder, leaning down and whispering into his ear. Cindy’s smile faltered, but she struggled to keep up with her pretense, while also acting as though she wasn’t noticing them. Jefferson continued staring straight at Cindy while the woman whispered to him, a coy smile on her face. A short while later, she discreetly grazed her lips on his neck and sashayed away.

Having had enough, Cindy stood up as graciously as she could and exited the reception room, her eyes filling with tears, and she ran down the hallway in her heels as best as she could. Moments ago, a little part of her felt
