I did, and something in the tone of my voice must have sounded like I was blaming her for it.

“Are you sure you’re well?” Miss Wragg asked. “You sound feverish.”

“I’m just upset,” I said.

I was. Yet I was lying. I was not upset about Swinton. I was more upset about Hirsch and Ned, and me.

I watched them that day at work and that night at the Alley. They came in together, chatting like old friends—as I had never seen Hirsch chat with anybody. It was so strange that it was obvious to everyone else, too, immediately. But I would not admit that Hirsch had given me up for him. Nor would I meet the eyes of those who looked at me in triumph and bitchery. Some boys there were nice, however; they came up and held my hand and talked to me with a softness in their voices, but not those others. Their eyes lit with mocking mischief as they looked on Hirsch and Ned, and then smiled back to me. I almost preferred them because I could hate them and threaten, “Just you wait” under my breath. I carved little figures of them with the knife the museum had bought for me. It was better than accepting the condolences of pity. I wouldn’t let go. I held on to the idea as tightly as a visitor to a madhouse holds on to his sanity. I would get Hirsch back from Ned Grimke.
