Helena was overcome with sadness at the thought of going home to her little apartment, and the car seemed to drive itself to Sirraâs place in Laugardalur. She knew she would be welcome there. She had a key and could let herself in if Sirra wasnât at home. A tacit agreement between them had taken shape. It was something they hadnât exactly talked through, but they had gradually progressed from what she thought of as hook-ups, practically one-night stands, usually arranged at short notice and with zero commitment, into something that Helena still hadnât fully figured out. She wasnât sure if she even wanted to know what it was. She just knew that she didnât want a permanent relationship, as that would demand too much of her time, and she couldnât see how it would fit around the effort she would have to put into climbing the police career ladder. All the same, there was something that continually pulled her to Sirra, and her interest in other women had fizzled out completely.
She suspected that a net was slowly and surely being drawn around her and they would end up in a proper relationship, even though she could pin down nothing Sirra had done to support this suspicion. She was always pleased to see her, and no longer set any rules â such as asking Helena to call in advance or stipulating meetings at particular times. Now she rarely prepared for Helenaâs appearance with a carefully laid table or by dressing specially, but was to be found reading, cooking or watching TV. Helena was always welcome, she said. No pressure, just be welcome. As a token of this, she had then handed Helena a key. Helena had wanted to run for it, as she knew that this was how cohabitation started, and living with Sirra wasnât something she wanted to tell anyone about. The fact that Sirra was subject to court proceedings and awaiting a verdict in a case that Helena had worked on made things awkward, and it would only feed the rumour mill if it were to get out. The whole Flosi case and Sirraâs role in it had made the headlines. But despite all this, Helena had accepted the key and was increasingly tempted to make use of it.
When she entered the living room, Sirra was on the sofa with her laptop on her knees.
âAre you working?â Helena asked.
Sirra shook her head before stretching upward for a kiss. âNo. Just looking around online and checking the news,â she replied. She closed the laptop and put it on the table, and Helena sat down at her side. âWhatâs new with you? How are you feeling?â she asked, to Helenaâs surprise â not so much at the question but her tone of voice.
âWhat do you mean?â
âI imagine youâre working on this latest barrel of fun?â
âWhat? Is it in the news?â Helena sat down and reached for her phone and opened the state broadcasterâs web page. It was only a matter
