They strolled through the festivities, talking and laughing at Charlie’s commentary. Charlie's eyes caught sight of a three-legged race happening down the street. He turned to Liam, a mischievous glint in his eye.

"Hey Liam, you up for a challenge?" Charlie asked, his voice full of playful excitement.

Liam cocked his head to the side, his brow furrowing in confusion. "A challenge? What kind of challenge?" he asked.

"A three-legged race, partner," Charlie replied, a grin spreading across his face.

Liam chuckled, his voice like honey dripping from his lips. "Hell no.”

“Why not?”

“Look how tall you are. I could never keep up!”

“I’ll go slow,” Charlie replied. “Come on! It’ll be fun!” He took Liam’s hand and ran over, not thinking at all about what it looked like. Liam’s throat bobbed as he gazed at the other racers, his hands trembling.

“I—I don’t know what to do,” Liam admitted, his face bright red.

“Here.” Charlie secured and tightened a piece of cloth around Liam's ankle, which he received from one of the men. “It’s simple. We race from here to there but with our legs tied together. Whoever makes it over there first wins. Ready?”

Liam's complexion was like a beautiful blend of earth and fire, with the bronze of his skin complimenting the fiery hue of his hair and the deep embers in his hazel eyes. Charlie felt the hairs on his arm bristle and he looked away. “Don’t tell me you’re afraid of a little competition.”

Liam’s eyes narrowed into pinpricks. “You’re on, beta.”

They made their way over to the starting line. The crowd gathered around them, cheering and hollering as they prepared to take off. "Ready, set, go!" the announcer shouted, and they were off.

Charlie's heart pounded as they hopped down the open field, his leg moving in sync with Liam's. It was like they were one person, their movements matched. Liam was laughing almost hysterically at Charlie, trying to lessen his strides for Liam to match his pace. It was stilted and awkward, but Charlie wouldn’t change a damn thing. It was the most fun he’d had in a long time. As they rounded the last corner, Charlie's foot caught on a rock in the grass, and he stumbled forward, plummeting face-first into the dirt, but Liam caught him.

“You idiot!” Liam couldn’t stop laughing.

“It’s harder than it looks!” Charlie shot back, but Liam helped him up, and they kept going, their laughter ringing out through the street like church bells on a Sunday morning. They crossed the finish line, both of them breathless and red-faced, and they collapsed onto the grass. Charlie couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment, the thrill of the race coursing through his veins like a shot of whiskey. Damn, this omega. Charlie’s chest heaved as he looked over at Liam, who was looking back, an infectious smile splitting his face. Liam's omega scent was like the earthy musk of turned soil in a garden, with a hint of damp moss and a touch of cedarwood. It was grounding and calming, like the feeling of walking barefoot through the woods on a cool autumn day.
