CHAPTER NINE

CLAIREY RESISTED THE urge to pinch herself as she stared at her image in the mirror. As cliché as it was, she felt like Cinderella on her way to the ball.

It was hard to believe the image in the glass was actually her. Her dress was unlike anything she’d worn before. A slinky midnight-blue number that draped over her body with a low-cut back. Low enough that Clairey had almost hung it right back up on the rack, but Lana had insisted it was perfect and jokingly hinted that Clairey was acting a tad prudish.

For the third time that day, she thanked her lucky stars for having met Lana when she’d first arrived. Being a native New Yorker, Lana knew where to go to find a formal dress at a relative bargain. The two of them had taken a cab to the fashion district with their two little charges in tow. Marnie had been delighted at the adventure.

She’d also borrowed a pair of dark velvet stilettos from the other woman, who luckily had the same size feet. The only shoes Clairey had brought with her were sensible and practical ones that someone chasing after an active little girl would need. Added to all that, now Lana was watching Marnie for the night so that she and Drexel could attend the charity auction together.

Looking at herself now, Clairey knew she’d never be able to adequately thank the other woman who was swiftly becoming a true friend.

Heavy footsteps sounded outside in the hall. A moment later, there was a soft knock on her door.

“Come in.”

Her door slowly opened, and Drexel stepped in, preoccupied with adjusting his cuff links. Clairey had to swallow down a gasp. The tuxedo he had on was clearly tailored especially for him. The suit fit him like glove. His hair was tidier than usual with a hint of gel. He looked like a prince straight out of a fairy tale.

Her very own Prince Charming. Except he wasn’t really hers. And he never would be.

“Almost ready?” he asked, still tooling around with his left cuff link.

“Yes.”

He finally looked up at her. His eyes snapped open wide, then traveled the length of her body. “Wow!”

Her pulse jumped. Clairey made sure not to react in any way. Though, it was so very hard. It wouldn’t do to act pleased at his reaction.

“You look...uh...”

Huh. She’d left him speechless. A twinge of feminine satisfaction hummed along her veins.

“So this will work?” she asked, running a hand along her midsection down toward her thigh.

His response was a very slow nod. “Oh, yeah. That all works. Really, really well.”

This time, she couldn’t hide her smile.

He blinked a couple more times before giving his head a slight shake. “Oh, before I forget...”

Clairey watched as he reached inside his jacket pocket and pulled out a small square object. A velvet box. Without any kind of preamble, he handed it to her.

“Can’t be engaged without a ring.”
