Chapter Thirty-Three

AUSTIN

The server brought us fresh glasses of sparkling water that he called whiskey.

The girl at the piano took a break, but five minutes later, another girl, this one wearing a blue dress, took her place.

The saloon was filling up, mostly with families now, coming in for an early dinner.

I checked my phone several times, but the little plan I had been working on didn’t appear to be going to happen.

It was disappointing, especially since Adrianna had specifically asked me to ride the train with her. I hadn’t expected that.

Something had happened in the depot that had her pulling away. But she had responded to my playfulness and now that was nothing more than a blip and we seemed back to normal.

In fact, after we had made our deal and I had taken her hand, something seemed to shift between us.

I’d felt a jolt when my hand touched hers.

An undeniable attraction. I’d known that attraction was there. I just hadn’t expected it to be quite so strong.

“Have you heard anything about the airplane?” Adrianna asked after I checked my phone for the tenth time.

“Not yet.”

“Do you feel stranded?”

“A little. Don’t you.”

“A little I guess. But for some reason, it doesn’t bother me.”

“It’s because you’re with me,” I said.

“Probably,” she said without a hitch, “Is there a good place to eat in town?”

“What? You don’t like the saloon?”

“I don’t mind the saloon.” She leaned forward. “It’s just…” She tapped her glass. “If this is whiskey, I’m little afraid of what our server might bring us to eat.”

“Good point. I’m sure we can find something.” I checked my phone again.

Adrianna narrowed her eyes at me. “You’re expecting a call. Or a message.”

“Busted,” I said.

“I don’t want to get you in trouble.”

“In trouble with who?”

“Whoever it is you’re waiting to hear from.”

“Actually. I’m working on dinner reservations. For us.”

She narrowed her eyes again.

“Unfortunately, I should have heard something by now. So… I guess we’ll have to come up with another plan.”

“I’m sure there are plenty of places we can have dinner.”

“There are, but you would have really liked this one.”

“What was it?”

Almost on cue, a message came through. I grabbed up my phone. Read the message. And grinned at Adrianna.

“We just got approved,” I said.

“Approved for dinner?”

“I think you’re going to like it. Do you have a dress with you?”

“Of course. But…”

“Come on then,” I said. “We have just enough time to get changed and make it on time.”

I signaled for the server.

“You’re being very mysterious,” she said.

“It’s all part of my charm.”
