Toxic Shock Syndrome
As has been mentioned previously, Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that can cause secondary infection in people who have become sick with the flu. Some people who are infected with this organism can go on to develop toxic shock syndrome (TSS). The influenza virus is thought to actually change the replication characteristics of toxin-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus. When these toxins are released into the system, severe consequences can occur, including:
â¢high fever;
â¢drop in blood pressure that doesnât respond to fluid resuscitation;
â¢redness of the eyes, lips, tongue, and throat;
â¢rash resembling sunburn, even on the palms and soles;
â¢nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea;
â¢headache, confusion, or even seizures; and
â¢muscle aches.
The treatment for TSS is hospitalization, antibiotics to target the Staphylococcal bacterium, blood pressure support, and relief for any other symptoms. Occasionally, the marked decrease in blood pressure and ongoing toxin production can lead to kidney failure, and patients need to proceed to dialysis. Rarely, the symptoms of TSS become overwhelming and death can occur.
