It took Sara some time to stop shaking. She had never been in such grave danger. This was all too new for her. Why was someone trying to kill her? Or at least kidnap her, as Don and Special Agent Schwartz thought. What had she done to these people? Nothing. She had only done her job by trying to keep a man alive. She was beginning to believe the old adage that no good deed goes unpunished. But she had always tried to remain positive under the most difficult circumstances. Even when she was a college student and the Dublin police had hauled her in to question her about her brother, she could not think that she had done anything wrong. After all, she had only helped her brother by letting him stay with her for a while. How could that be so bad? That’s what siblings did for one another.

Nearly an hour after the shooting ended, a period that seemed more like six hours, Sara had insisted on seeing the man who had tried to break into the spare room where she was staying. Reluctantly, Agent Schwartz agreed to let her see the dead man.

“I’ve never seen this man before,” she said as a crime scene technician rolled the man over and let her see the guy’s face. The dead man looked like he could have been anyone on the street. Mid-forties. Strong jaw line. Close-cropped hair. An Asian man of indeterminate origin. “Who is he?”

Agent Schwartz squatted down for a closer look, the man’s face reflected by the flood lights that had been brought in. The body was protected from the rain by a portable shelter. “Don’t know. He had no ID. We’ve taken digital shots of his face and his prints. Along with the tattoo on his back. We’ll know soon if he’s in any of the systems.”

“MAC Ten,” Don said, stooping alongside the agent and pointing at the gun in the grass alongside the dead man. “With thirty round magazine in forty-five caliber. Fully auto. From the sounds I heard and the ringing in my ears, I’d say the others also had these Jam-a-Matics.”

“That’s what the spent brass tells us,” Schwartz said. “Your nine mil rounds did a number on his body, though.”

“Seven impacts,” the tech said. “All in the chest.”

Sara leaned down and said, “Okay, boys. Now that we’ve admired our work, what about me? How you plan on protecting me?”

Don and the agent stood up and looked at each other and then Sara.

Schwartz said, “We’ll put you up in a hotel somewhere in Portland.”

“They followed you here,” Sara told him. “What makes you think you can secure me at a hotel?”

“She’s got a point,” Don said.

“Wait a minute. We don’t know they followed us here. They could have simply followed the bread crumbs. Don here was living next to you, and when they saw the two of you together, even Inspector Clouseau could have found this place.”

“It took you a couple days to find us,” Don reminded the agent.
