We reached the first fort of Cherven in four days of marching. We were paired in the vanguard and right wing of the army with the Greeks under Bardas, and a couple of smaller mixed contingents who were a mongrel mix of Rus, Norse, Greeks and even Poles and Bulgars. The way the army marched, if we reached a site where battle was expected, the vanguard would move out to the right, and the centre would fill out beside us, block by block, with the rearguard taking up the final positions on the left. Thus could an army of ten thousand, too large to see and command from one position, be quickly taken from marching order to battle order. We camped in the same way. It was simple and resistant to confusion.

It also meant we spent the entire campaign alongside Bardas and his Greeks.

Look, the men hated each other in the way that soldiers so easily hate. I resented Bardas for his behaviour and his rumour-mongering about Harald, but I recognised that his men were disciplined and competent, no matter what insults ours spewed at them. They were a good group of soldiers, and he had my respect for that.

But in camp together, pitched side by side, the insults and bad blood could not be contained, and it was at the Cherven fort that the pot that had been overheating for so long finally boiled over.
