Winona was too upset by her friend’s cries to be excited at the food she had found. Margaret would not stop crying. Although her mother held her and said comforting words to her, she did not ask what was wrong. Her mother knew. Winona knew as well. Neither needed to be told.

Winona led them further into the cornfield. Finally Margaret was able to stop crying and settle down some. But she would not eat or drink. Winona worried about this. They needed to keep going and get past the fort or they would not make it to safety today, but she could tell that neither Margaret nor her mother were able to go on. Margaret cried herself to sleep. Her mother had baby Isaac unbundled and he was happily playing with his toes.

Winona bent the corn some to create a bit of a sunshade and lay down herself. They had left a lot of tracks. She hoped that the braves who had done all the earlier damage would not return and the ruined buildings would not attract any new attacks or searches.
