CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

MARY ANN

About four hours after Andrew has come home and then gone again, her phone rings.

It’s Michael.

He says, “Is Andrew home yet? Can I talk to him?”

“No, he’s gone. I mean, he was home. For a minute. But now he’s gone again. He said he needed a vacation. Needed to get away. Alone. It’s not at all like him. He was shaken up. What happened, Michael?”

“Well, not much that I could see. I told him some things I remember, and he said I was a good con man. Then he looked in my eyes and started saying he was tired. We were supposed to have breakfast, but he took off. Did he say anything to you?”

“Just one thing. He said it’s not a scam. He says you really believe it.”

“But not that he does?”

“No, of course not.”

A silence falls that feels oddly personal, considering no personal words have been exchanged.

She stares at the photo on the table, two crazy people on a rough, unpainted porch, their clothes covered with dirt and grease. Crazy lady who doesn’t seem to know she’s over sixty, her hair all slicked back, smiling like a kid. A stoned kid.

He breaks the silence. He says, “Can I see you? I really need to see you.”

This ties in with something she had intended to say. Something she would have called to say, if he hadn’t called her first.

She says, “I’m going to send you a plane ticket.”

“No, save your money; let me drive.”

“I’m going to send you a plane ticket to New Jersey. I’ll try to get a flight close to the same time. I’ll meet you at the airport. I’ll send the ticket overnight mail.”

“Why, what’s in New Jersey?”

“Someone I want you to meet.”

“Okay, fine. I’ll go anywhere. I just want to see you.”
