ROUTE 35

By Beinn Chuirn

Start Dalrigh car park off A82 NN 344 291

Distance 13km/8 miles up

Total Ascent 1450m/4800ft

Time 7hr up

Terrain Grassy hillsides, sometimes steep and rough

The north face of Ben Lui is 600m high, and quite a bit more complex than the map suggests. Making your way up it you could feel like that early party on the Eiger with only a picture postcard of the face for a guide – except that you don't have the picture postcard. But at the crucial entry point (instead of the daring Hinterstoisser Traverse with its irreversible rope moves) a convenient deer path leads sideways between two craggy bits, and above that the line memorised from the hill opposite unfolds without any difficulties. The First Grassfield, the Second Grassfield, lead inexorably to the Waterfall Ramp – except that you get to walk up beside the splashy stuff instead of climbing underwater in a blizzard.

All right, the north face of Ben Lui isn't actually the Last Great Problem in Grassy Hillwalking – but it is just Eigerlike enough to be exciting. Taken with the preliminary Corbett of Beinn Chuirn, followed by the bonus Munros of Oss and Dubhchraig (Route 38 descent) it certainly qualifies you as a hard man or woman, one not cowed by the Calf Mountain.
