Chapter Twenty

Soren

I GREET JACK with a kiss.

“I’m so glad you’re here,” I say.

I immediately regret it as worry tightens Jack’s expression. He steps into the apartment so I can close the door behind him.

“Is something wrong?” he says, suspicion thick in his voice.

Not that I can blame him. After what happened with Grayson, he has every reason to be on edge. I told him it would be fine, but I withheld how it would be fine. He has no idea Grayson has a knife at my throat, poised to strike if I don’t give him what he wants. I pray Jack will never find out what I’m going to have to do to keep us safe. I’ll resolve this quietly, and if we’re lucky no one but Grayson will ever find out what happened.

“Nothing’s wrong,” I say. “Just happy to see you.”

He looks less than convinced, so I curl my hands in his shirt and pull him back down to my mouth. I’m not loving the hesitation in his kiss. He’s holding something back, tense and wary thanks to the incident in the pantry.

I try to keep the mood light. “Come on, let me show you the apartment. I don’t think you’ve ever actually seen it.”

He chuckles darkly. “Guess I haven’t except that one morning you left before me. I didn’t snoop around though.”

“Never suspected you did, but now I can give you a proper tour.”

He pries off his shoes and I take his hand so I can lead him down the little entry hall. A bathroom stands to one side; my bedroom lies at the far end. But I turn away from our usual haunt, taking him into the part of my apartment he’s probably never seen. A narrow little kitchen waits on the other side of the wall. It isn’t big, but it’s enough for a fridge and stovetop and microwave. I even have a display for my teas that sits on the counter beside a kettle. Next to that is the living room, with my single loveseat overflowing with blankets and pillows, and the television Dad helped me mount to the wall.

I don’t have much else. A few plants on the balcony railing that are overwintering at the moment. A bookshelf that mostly contains miscellaneous junk. A couple artsy pictures on the walls. The life I’ve built here has been a simple one, largely thanks to me trying to build it when I was so young. I ran away to this place with no idea what the hell I was doing, but I’m proud of my tiny apartment with its cozy clutter. I did this on my own, and none of it was easy.

It sets my teeth on edge to think about Grayson ripping it away from me. He could take all of this. My life isn’t extravagant, yet it could plunge down several tiers if he decides to ruin my career over what he saw in that pantry.

I shake that off. I don’t want Jack worrying about it.
