Chapter 10

Robin Hester

The next day, Robin had received an express-mail package that was addressed to her from Luddie. She and the girls had gone to Dexter’s townhome to pack more things for a long stay away from home. In the process, she’d packed clothes, daily essentials, files for projects Dexter was in the middle of working on, and his MacBook Pro. Luddie had also reported that the photographers had still been camped outside on his steps when she’d arrived, but she had called her husband, Patrick, who was a New York police detective, and he’d sent someone out to clear away the vultures for loitering. She and the girls had left once they were gone. Robin was impressed by how Dexter and his ex-wife were more than just friends; they were family.

Dexter had also been in touch with his mother by use of a secure line. They’d been planning their next step. Meanwhile, shortly after Dexter’s package arrived, Robin received her delivery of wires, glass, plastics, metals, ladders, a few platforms, hooks, soldering gun, a welding helmet, and other necessities required to complete her installation project. It had been quite a while since she’d felt so inspired. It was as if ideas were falling into her brain like binary code dropping from the sky. Her every decision made sense.

Days passed into night, and pretty soon, they were into the second week of hibernating in their love cave. At times, Dexter would enter her studio and bring her a sandwich or bagel or another cup of coffee. Mostly when he came into her workspace, they would end up making love on the chaise that faced the view of the East River. Sometimes, he would come just to taste her, and when she took a break, she would go into the office where he worked so she could put her mouth on him.

She loved how he listened to her explain in detail her ideas about moving forward in her project. He would ask her questions like “How did you come to that conclusion?” When she would play him parts of her installation and ask how it made him feel, he would tug her against him, and his passionate kiss would be the answer.

It was twenty minutes after noon on a Wednesday, or maybe Thursday, when Robin’s cell phone rang. She was in the middle of testing a light effect, but her gut told her it was Claudia checking in, so she quickly answered.

Robin tapped her earpod, and it picked up the call. “Yes, Claudia, you can view the first segment by this weekend.”

There was a brief silence, and then a male voice said, “Hi.”

Robin stiffened. “Mars?”

“How have you been?” he asked as though he were catching up with an old friend.

“What do you want?” she snapped.

“Ah, I see. You know what was between Plume and I wasn’t real, right?”

“Hey babe, come here!” Dexter called from the den, where he’d been watching television.

Robin looked over her shoulder. “Lose my number,” she said quickly then ended the call.
