Chapter Twenty-Four

The Final Hurdle

T he ball went up, hanging motionless for the barest sliver of a second at the apex of its arc. Four sets of eyes charged toward it, but only one set of legs propelled itself into the air. As the ball plummeted, a hand drew itself back like a catapult dropping into a firing position. Sleek hair streaming behind her as she reached the ball’s height, Samantha delivered a powerful strike into it above the net.

A blur of synthetic leather zoomed over the net toward the ground beyond the attack line. The two women waiting for it responded immediately. As the one on the left took a step, then recognized it wasn’t hers to chase and stopped herself from taking another, the one on the right exerted herself and attempted to get herself in front of Samantha’s spike. This time, to no avail.

Before Samantha’s feet met the ground, her attack shanked off Angela’s forearms, sending the ball hurtling outside the court beyond where Christine’s feet could carry her. Shaking her fist victoriously, Samantha shifted her eyes from her two opponents back to her partner.

Jason threw a high-five in front of the beautiful woman’s infectious jubilance. However, more than their hands connected as Samantha pushed herself into his chest and thrust her lips against his. Overwhelmed by the balmy feeling, even if this was the dozenth time he’d experienced such a connection with her today, he greedily elongated the kiss for as long as they could get away with it.

It wasn’t until the volleyball they’d scored their most recent point with thudded loudly on the clay of Christine’s volleyball court nearby that they parted. Stepping into its bouncing path, Jason collected the ball. Samantha grinned provocatively at the two women on the other side of the court. Their responses were similar, though with some slight differences.

Christine seemed more annoyed than embarrassed by the regular physical contact he and Samantha had engaged in during their match. Not because of the contact but because she hadn’t thought to do the same thing during the last game when she’d been his partner. This was the third of three games they’d played, and teams had shuffled between each one. First, he’d played alongside Angela, then Christine, and now Samantha was his partner. Only the last of those had realized that she could prickle her opponents’ mood by making out with him or having him grope her after each successful point they scored. Much to Christine’s chagrin, they both well noticed. She did not seem to enjoy having been out-Christined.

By comparison, Angela’s dimples—her telltale sign of displeasure—had immediately appeared on display from the first kiss. However, rather than disdain, he gleaned a different emotion at the forefront of her glares.

Envy.

Jason gave Samantha’s erotically gorgeous butt a hard smack as he carried the ball back behind the serving line. Samantha shot him a lusty look over her shoulder as a secondary prize. Christine rolled her eyes on the other side of the outdoor court, and Angela flattened her expression.
