Chapter six

Tyler

Should I call? Text? Wait for him to make the first move? Guys. HELP!

My panicked message to my friends in our group chat gets an immediate response. Nick, of course, is the first to respond and suggests I send a dick pic. Dan, Min, and Sash vehemently disagree, but Avy’s the voice of reason and tells me I should call him.

You guys are already having great conversations, Avy writes. And it’s too easy to misconstrue tone in a text.

Min agrees. If you were trying to arrange a date, texting would be fine, but you want to talk to him, right? So talk.

I have to admit, she’s right about that. I don’t want that weird back and forth and the struggle to be interesting with zero feedback from the other person. I don’t want to read “LOL,” I want to hear Cameron’s laugh and those moments when we just pause and share space for a few seconds.

If you’re lucky, you’ll end up with some spank bank material, Nick types.

Do you have to be so gross? Sash asks.

What? It’s not like we don’t all know Ty’s going to be “self-pleasuring” tonight.

Kill me now, I write back. Why did I ask for advice?

Because you love us, Min answers. And, with the exception of Nick, we’re all rooting for you.

Here’s my suggestion, Roman types, and I’m thrilled to see them finally entering the conversation. Roman is often the voice of reason in our group. Text him first to see if he’s available to talk. Tell him you miss him and couldn’t wait until tomorrow. I mean, it’s basically the truth. And it gives him an out if he’s busy or doesn’t want to talk. Right?

That comment receives a bunch of hearts, and I have to admit it’s a pretty good suggestion.

But you have to tell us what happens, Dan writes. I’ve got money riding on this.

I debate for a few seconds about whether I should tell everyone that Cameron asked me out. It’s kind of a private thing, but, at the same time, my best friend bet that I could get a date before Nick, and I’ve done it.

Yeah. Well…

OMG, Min types out before I can finish. We won?

Cameron asked me to go on a date when the trial is over while we were eating lunch together today.

There’s a bunch of champagne bottle emojis and confetti, and I try not to be insulted that they’re acting like it’s a miracle, but then Avy chimes in.

Wait. Was the bet getting asked out or going on an actual date?

Does it matter?

I think it was going out on a date.

Me too.

The messages are coming in so thick and fast, I’m not sure who’s making the comments, but then Avy says he thinks the bet was going out on an actual date and says that gives Nick time to catch up.

Are you kidding? Nick asks. Tomorrow’s Valentine’s Day. I’m not asking someone out on Valentine’s Day just to win a stupid bet. I’ll look desperate. Not only that, it’s a surefire way to give someone the impression that you want something more serious.
