IT TOOK ME THREE DAYS and four large trash bags to put my room back together that Mama destroyed in less than an hour. Grandmom still hasn’t gotten out of her bed. At least, she is eating, taking her medications, and checking her blood sugar regularly. We need cleaning supplies and food again, and tomorrow is the last day of nineteen eighty-four. I am ready to start a new year. Out with the fucked-up psycho bullshit and in with peace, quiet, and normalcy. This has been a horrid year.

I take Grandmom a tray with a sandwich and a cup of hot tea. “I need to go to the store today. Is there anything you would like?”

“No.”

“Well, how about we cook something special together for New Year’s supper?”

“Get whatever you want. Doesn’t matter to me.”

“All right, well I’m going to go ahead and go before the snow gets worse. I think we are supposed to get close to a foot.”

She doesn’t respond she just stares down at the tray.

I go over, pick up her purse, and take cash out of her wallet. “You will be okay until I get back?”

She shakes her head in agreement. “Yes.”

After I make a quick check of what we needed, I bundle myself up with thermal underwear under my jeans and shirt. I’m so thankful for Black Betty. I’m not sure how we would have survived with me walking or riding a bicycle this winter. I walk out, pull the tarp off her, and hook up the trailer.

I wasn’t surprised at the full parking lot at A&P, being a holiday and massive amounts of snow predicted. I hope the shelves aren’t bare. I park my bike along the side of the store and lock it up.

I carry my helmet in with me and take off my gloves and hat and place them in the buggy along with my helmet. The rush of heat when I step into the store, feels awesome. I stop and look at the Christmas candy that is now on sale, I pick up a box. It is nice to be out of the house and a change of scenery.

I’m working my way around the store and I know the news about my mother has already made its rounds around town. Seems like every house has a police scanner so that they can hear any and everything that is happening, which isn’t much. Who’s drunk at the bar or domestic disturbance call, or in my case, a batshit crazy mother. I have become an expert at ignoring people.

I’m looking at the frozen pizzas. I could smell her Jovan Musk before I could see her, Twyla Jenkins. Shit. Please don’t let her see me...

“Well, well... if it isn’t Lavender Nolan... How was your holiday?” Twyla asked, smacking on the gum she had in her mouth.

I didn’t look at her. “Great.”

“Oh, that’s not what I heard. I heard your mama came home.”

“Yep,” I state, pulling down a Totino’s sausage pizza and placing it in my buggy.
