Sixteen

I finished suiting up. As my helmet clicked and the heads-up information turned on, my stomach churned with fear and regret. I’d left my mom, scared and confused, in front of the SSA crime scene perimeter fence. I hadn’t told her anything that wasn’t true, but a lie of omission is still a lie. Restoring her confidence was mission one, and I’d just flushed it down the toilet.

I rotated my head in a circle, making sure I had full range of motion, and did the same with my shoulders and legs. Funny how the suit felt more natural than a rich kid blazer. Well, maybe not that funny.

I didn’t know what to do with the information from the Captain’s card. Last week I’d run around with a letter from Jackal that he’d used to connect with me like he did with the idol. If Jackal could do it, safe to assume the SSA could, too. I’d taken a picture of the card with my phone, left the card on the bus I’d used, then stashed my phone before I got to my nest.

I felt a little guilty about leaving Tor to deal with the SSA at the hospital, but I hadn’t known where to find him and hadn't wanted to draw more SSA attention to myself by calling him or walking around poking my head into different vans. I’d make it up to him. Maybe treat him to a burger at Pete’s.

For now, I had a job to do. I knew how to find the Confessor, but not without revealing my identity. I knew the Worm was involved but I didn’t know how that helped me. I needed to get the team together, then find a way to track the Confessor.

I called the team party line.

No answer. Funny, I’d just assumed that Butterfly lived on that line. I couldn’t call Flare, even though getting her number would be easy now. As Ryan, I couldn’t very well ask her to come out and fight super villains. I knew Peregrine’s home number. He was the only member of the team that knew my real name. And boy, was that a great feeling.

Okay, time to make my other call.

I removed Jackal’s idol from its hiding space, and was relieved to see it spring to life at once. “What can I do for you?”

“Really? No crap about me quitting, or what favor I need to do for you?” This was strange.

“Sure, we can do that stuff, but if you’re coming to me after you quit, that means the stuff has really hit the fan. So talk to me. What’s going on?”

I told him about what had happened at the hospital and the impending zombie apocalypse if they got the yellow gas to enough of the Stardust users.

“Okay, let me clear my calendar. That just bumped my eight o’clock.” He paused. Maybe he was actually bumping his eight o’clock. “Let's talk next course of action.”

“We’ve got to find the Confessor.” And I did not want to involve Sofia unless the alternative was a dead city.
