Chapter 30

Upstairs in her hotel room Isobel sat on the bed. She thought about Inspector Doran – Damien – and the piece of paper he had given her. He believed he was in danger.

She thought for a minute then picked up her phone.

“Eoin, hi, are you back in Limerick?”

“Almost. Is everything alright?”

“I’ve just had a meeting with Detective Doran. He’s the junior officer we have been liaising with. We gave him a copy of the enhanced photographs yesterday, before I contacted you. He took them to the police lab to go through their system. While he was there he asked about the originals and it turned out that the police lab never got them. They suggested that maybe the shots had been sent to a private lab that the police sometimes use. He checked with them and again the photos weren’t submitted. He thinks his boss, Inspector Williams, might have suppressed the pictures. I met him and he’s distraught.”

“Are you saying that Detective Doran thinks that his boss Inspector Williams is corrupt?”

“He’s beginning to wonder about that, yes.”

“Did anyone else know about the photos? Did Doran or Williams show them to anyone else?”

“I don’t know. They’re the only ones I know about.”

“It might be worth asking Doran if anyone else knew about the pictures. There can’t be many but it’s best to be sure before you jump to any conclusions.”

“OK, I’ll ask him.”

“I suppose I should let Aaron know about this. He might be able to keep an eye on things, or find out something about it when he’s up in Belfast.”

“I don’t know about that. I worry about putting Damien in danger.”

“Damien?”

“Detective Doran.”

“Oh, it’s Damien now, is it?”

“He was really upset, really frightened and very disillusioned. I feel sorry for him. He seemed to care and he was doing his best to solve the case and now he’s in the middle of a cover-up. He even gave me a signed statement of all that he told me in case something happens to him.”

“God, that is serious. Isobel, what a mess you’ve landed into. I wish you were miles away from all of that. Drug dealers are dangerous but bent cops are lethal – they have everything to lose.”

“I’ll be careful but I agree that this is awful. I thought it was bad when Aaron started talking about organised crime but this corruption is worse.”

“Unfortunately, Isobel, they often go hand in hand.” Eoin took a noisy breath. “OK. Find out from Damien who else knew about the photographs. I’ll ask Aaron why Belfast was so slow to identify the men.”

“Don’t mention Detective Doran or, I don’t know, maybe the labs and what Damien found. It might put him in danger or draw attention if Aaron asks too many questions.”

“I won’t mention any names or talk about the labs, just a general query about how tardy Belfast was and see what he can find out. OK?”

“Yeah. OK. Thanks, Eoin.”

“Where are you staying, Isobel? I hope you’re safe.”

“I’m in the Park Hotel. It seems safe.
