The RICH COLORS of FALL

FALL is the season where the landscape most strongly mirrors the produce. It is dominated by the colors of the harvest—a wash of golds, reds, oranges, and yellows, all tawny and burnished and warm. The beginning of the season is summer’s last hurrah—tomatoes, peppers, and summer squash, and even peaches, plums, and melons hang on into late September. The nights cool and lengthen, and warm and comforting foods come into their own. Winter squash, such as delicata, acorn, and kabocha, burst onto the scene with orange and golden and green hues in the fall (and, true to their name, will keep into the winter). Apples and pears taste their best right now, and there are so many gorgeous heirloom varieties to be excited by. The first of the brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and kale are kind of exciting at this time of year, before the long winter when we’re so anxious for spring’s color and bright produce.
