My new bed is ridiculously comfortable. The kids have settled in their new rooms. Harry adores his racing car bed, and when I left Chloe, she was lying in her cot, mesmerized by the rotating bird mobile and glowing night light.

I should be asleep by now. It's been a long-ass day and I haven't had a decent night's sleep for what feels like forever. But my brain won't switch off. There are so many things spinning around in there. All I can think about are the items on my list of supplies Harry needs before starting kindergarten. I need to call Chloe's nursery as well, so I can make sure she still has a place.

Knowing that bitch Janice, she won't, but I refuse to worry about that until I've had confirmation. There are other nurseries out there. I'm sure Chloe will settle in just fine if I have to move her to a new one.

That said, if I can't find another job, she won't need to go to the nursery.

I called the diner yesterday. Doris answered and told me they no longer needed me. Derek had hired someone else. It wasn't a massive shock. I knew he wouldn't keep my job open forever, and it's been weeks.

There are other jobs. Maybe I'll find one that pays more than minimum wage.

One thing she did tell me, however, was that the cops had come looking for me, wanting to talk to me about Enzo. She had no clue he was dead so I played dumb. I told her we'd split a few weeks earlier, and I'd left not long after to take care of a family emergency.

Kade told me not to worry. He said he'd make sure they forgot about me. His contact in the department has told him they believe Enzo's murder was gang-related, as they knew he was selling drugs out of the club.

Something else I was oblivious to.

It feels like I never knew Enzo at all.

I pull out my Kindle and open the book I've been reading for the last week. It's a 'why choose' MC romance. One naive girl and three massive, hot bikers. The plot is sparse but the sex scenes are hot.

Not that my libido needs any encouragement. Cin seems to spend way too much time shirtless, and Madden only has to glower at me when I say something he doesn't agree with to give my pussy inappropriate ideas.

Being around Kade is no better. He acts like my father's lackey but whenever I turn around, he's staring at me the way I once looked at him, back when I was a teenager with a mammoth crush: i.e. with naked longing. Emphasis on the naked.

Reading is usually my escape, but thirty minutes pass and I swear I've read the same page three times. Then I hear a light tap on my door.

With a sigh, I drag myself out of bed, smooth my messy hair down, and crack the door open.

"Need some company?" Cin smirks as he leans against the door frame.
