Chapter 14

The Prince of Darkness Comes Home

A meditation on immortality and morality.

A vampire’s lament.

That’s it. I’m writing myself into the narrative. It’s all been Iris this, Iris that. It’s time to focus the story on what really matters.

Me.

Elias Vane Spero.

I’ve been number one on the most wanted list for years. I’ve searched for the Moonlight Sword for decades. It’s my blood the Whiter Rider wants. Clearly, I am the true star of this book. The most interesting person on the page. The pièce de résistance, as it were.

What’s that, good fellow?

You want to get back to Iris? Want to see what happens after my sister pulls a blade on the once First Hunter?

All pish posh really. Insignificant.

What really matters is me. What I’ve been up to. You see, while Iris was off taking over a castle, quite splendidly I might add, I was scouring the ship known as the Dread Shark, looking for clues as to my sister’s true intentions. Yes, I may have found a flask along the way, and yes, perhaps I borrowed this black wool cloak and leather vest without asking, as well as acquired a few more peculiar items, but the point is…

I found some correspondence between Aya and the council. Seems my dear sister has been busy writing letters to Thalius of a particular devious nature. The two are scheming, it appears, though their exact plan is hard to decipher. The main details I can gather are…

Two: Thalius knows Iris and I are on the Dread Shark.

So, when my dear sister points a rapier at Iris’ throat, I am in no way surprised. She may be a Spero, but she’s also a Vane. Betrayal runs in our blood.

Of course, I have prepared for just such an occasion. Drawing my sword, a pitiful thing I grabbed back at the Lotus, I point my blade at Aya. “What is the meaning of this?” I roar, dramatically. I must sell my surprise, after all.

My sister scoffs. “It was fun using you to retake High Castle, but it’s time you returned to your cell.”

Her crew, a mismatched lot of men and women who look pulled from the darkest of alleys, cheer and holler and grin, drawing their crude blades. This is what they wanted from the start. The bounty on our heads. They only postponed our capture so Iris could help them win the battle. Clever lot, though of course it was Aya’s idea from the start.

Iris looks mad as hell, her brow pinched in the most delightful manner. “You used me.”

“For a good cause,” says the princess. “Now, if you’d be so kind as to follow me to the brig below.” Her crew closes in as if to say, or else.

At least, they try to close in.

One of them, a large man wearing a white shirt that is much too tight, (seriously, where is a
