A FAILED ALLIANCE

Sitting in his exquisite office, pretending to be busy with paperwork, King George cleared his throat. Right after, the messenger entered. He said nothing and handed a letter to him. The letter was signed by Prince Louis. The king expected nothing from the young prince, not in that timeline at least, with him having nothing to do with Randel after Margaret had left.

“King George Crossburgh of Randel,

It has been a pleasure knowing your family, ours has been the most loyal as possible. Can’t say the same for yours. This letter was written out of awareness. And in that sense, I’m aware of Randel’s attack on me days ago. It will be ill of me to let you expect kindness from me in the future. Stay healthy, for we shall meet again soon.

Prince Louis Ray Robinson III”

After the reading the disrespectful letter Louis had sent, anger began to rise above his head. He teared up the sheet of paper and threw it across the office. The messenger entered after being yelled in. He picked up the letter torn on the floor and hid behind him, refraining the king to look at it. It wasn’t a first for him to handle a task like such. He took a few steps forward and apologized for bringing to him, an unwanted message.

King George got up from his chair and stormed out without a word to the man present. He immediately head to the guards’ chambers and screamed out their presence. They were sitting down altogether, eating, enjoying the little time off they had. Quickly after noticing the king's presence, they got up and bowed. It was reflex. They picked up their sword and put it behind their back, facing down at their boots.

“You boys had one job, one, - eliminate the prince, but you failed. You may have failed but which idiot in here led him to us? Which one of you deserves to take his place?” He didn’t waste time before stating his mind.

No one said a word, they kept their heads down. They didn’t dare. But one out of the chosen six looked at the two beside him before lifting his head to look at the king. He was the leader of the pack.

They were more like bandits than guards. They did the dirty work the king asked them to do, and the rest of the guards protected and fought for the kingdom. They were scapegoats.

Joseph, the leader of the bandits looked at his king and talked back.

“I’m sorry, Your Majesty, it was brought to me that one of our swords was left behind at the scene. The prince may have come back for it.”

King George chuckled. He looked behind him for a second before grabbing Joseph’s hair, pulling his head back. The strong grip on his hair took him aback. The others were startled by his action, but they kept their heads down, in disgrace.

The princess was nothing else than bait to the king. He attacked Louis not for fun but with a purpose.
