Chapter Fourteen

Unforeseen Delights

Sandy

The murmur of distant voices and the steady hum of machines brought me to consciousness. My eyes fluttered open, the weight of sleep still pressing down on them. I was momentarily disoriented, trying to piece together where I was. The room was dim, the only light coming from a soft night light glowing over my bed. My hand instinctively moved to my arm, feeling the cool band of the IV taped to my skin.

Turning my head to the side, my heart fluttered as I spotted Mark. He was curled up in a recliner next to my bed. His strong features softened in sleep. His hands, usually so animated, rested still on his lap. He looked so peaceful, so out of place in the detached hospital setting. The sight of him there, keeping a silent vigil at my side, sent a warmth coursing through me.

I spent a few moments simply watching him. The steady rise and fall of his chest, the way his lashes shadowed his cheeks, and the occasional twitch of his lips as if he was having a dream. The urge to reach out and touch him was strong, to assure me that he was real and not a figment of my imagination. But I held back, afraid of waking him up. He must have been exhausted to have fallen asleep in such an uncomfortable position.

Tears pricked my eyes as I realized he must have sneaked back in after visiting hours to be by my side—a lump formed in my throat. No one had ever cared for me in such a profound way since childhood.

Though the IV bag was empty, I hesitated to call the nurse. The last thing I wanted was to get Mark in trouble for being here past visiting hours. And honestly, seeing him there was comfort enough for now.

As if sensing my gaze, his eyelids fluttered, revealing those intense hazel eyes that always seemed to pierce right through me. They widened slightly as they met mine, and I saw a rush of relief wash over him. It was as if he had feared that I might not wake up.

"Sandy," he whispered, his voice hoarse from sleep.

"Hey," I replied softly, smiling weakly at him. "Looks like I've put you through quite the ordeal."

He leaned forward, capturing my hand gently in his, intertwining our fingers. "You have no idea," he murmured, his thumb caressing the back of my hand. "We were all so worried."

I squeezed his arm reassuringly. "I'm fine, Mark. And I'm eager to get back to work."

He chuckled lightly, the sound warming my heart. But then his face grew serious again. "Sandy, you need to rest. The doctor mentioned you'll need some days to recover fully. I've been pushing you too hard. Plans are already in place for me to drive you to your sister’s for a few days of R and R."

I huffed; my impatience clear. "I know, but this is blown all out of proportion. I was just hot and... and didn't drink enough water at the tractor pull.
