Chapter Eighteen

CIS Safehouse

Patočkova Street, Kajetánka

Prague, Czechia

“Yes, sir, that’s exactly what I’m saying: Foster has gone rogue,” Jack repeated impatiently as he lifted an eyebrow.

He had been explaining the course of events to his boss. Gilson had been skeptical about Foster’s treachery, citing his stellar record of operations. “Maybe it was a ploy,” he had stated more than once. “A cunning way to get out of that sticky situation.”

Jack had disagreed with his boss’s assessment, but that wasn’t the hill he was willing to die on. He wanted to move on and plot the operation to retrieve Foster and the intelligence wanted by both MI6 and GRU.

“Okay, okay, I understand that’s what happened,” Gilson said in a hurried tone, eager to turn the page on this part of the conversation. “If you’re considering Foster hostile, needless to say, your operation has taken a turn for the worse.”

Jack nodded. “Uh-huh.”

“MI6 might be an ally, but I wouldn’t want to count on them.” Gilson’s voice had taken on a careful tone, and he was speaking slower and softer. “In terms of support, as I mentioned earlier, we might need to reactivate Justin Hall.”

Jack bit his lip. He wanted to say that he also mentioned earlier that assistance wasn’t necessary. He had everything under control. But do I really? he thought. Or am I being too cocky? He sighed and said, “Sir, I think I can handle the situation. We still haven’t looked at everything. There’s Foster’s dead girlfriend. I haven’t explored the angle about her sister and how much she might be involved.”

Gilson didn’t reply right away, but Jack could hear his mental gears at work. A few moments passed in uneasy silence, then his boss said, “What do you expect to find?”

“I’m not sure, but she might know where I can find Foster,” Jack answered in a hopeful tone. He shifted in the chair and leaned into the phone over the kitchen table, next to his laptop. “Cal, I mean MI6 Agent Charles Wright, also said they had some intel.”

“MI6 might want their pound of flesh, considering the recent shooting.”

Jack hesitated for a moment but decided to ask the question because he wanted to clarify his orders. “And how does that affect my op?”

Gilson heaved a deep sigh. “Foster is a liability, for sure, but it’s better if we bring him in than if the Brits nab him.”

Jack frowned. That wasn’t the reply he was expecting. Considering Foster’s betrayal of his agency and his unsanctioned activities, handing him over to the Brits seemed like the best course of action. He had stolen classified intelligence from MI6 headquarters and was seemingly selling it to the Russians. As long as MI6 didn’t identify Foster as a CIS operative and understood that Foster had gone rogue, the CIS would save face and justice would be served, in Jack’s opinion. He had discussed that option with his boss, but Gilson had dismissed it.

He had a different opinion. “We can’t afford a diplomatic incident, Storm,” he had remarked in a stern yet thoughtful voice.
