Chapter 15

Beau finally got Charlotte to sleep around ten o’clock for the first time. The second time, he got her to sleep around midnight.

But it made no difference because he couldn’t sleep after that phone call.

Lucy was getting married.

To Levi.

And Beau would have to live with that. If she walked back through his front door, he was going to smile if it killed him. He would offer a hug, congratulations, ask to see the ring. All those things a good friend would do. Then, when Rachel came back, he’d show her how well he’d done with Charlotte and ask her to marry him. Because if he couldn’t be with Lucy, it didn’t matter who he wound up with. He wouldn’t be happy either way. Better to be unhappy with the mother of his child.

He was still up at two a.m. when he heard Lucy’s car roll up the driveway. It would have made more sense for her to go home with Levi, but he wasn’t entirely surprised. Lucy’s sense of obligation ran deep. Marriage proposal or not, she would have finished her shift, collected her tips, then back to Beau’s so she could be here early in the morning. As promised. It occurred to him, for one minute, that she might have said no to Levi. If so, poor sap. Beau almost felt sorry for him. Almost.

He stood from the kitchen table when Lucy opened the side door connecting to the patio. For once, he couldn’t read her expression. She was walking fast, stopping only to set her bag down by the couch, still not looking at him.

“Did you say yes?” It was the only question he wanted answered and he wanted an answer now.

It felt like the rest of his life hinged on that information. Like the road before him had a curve and a huge dip ahead and he had to know which way to turn.

It happened so fast Beau didn’t even see it coming, but Lucy continued her fast walking toward him. She didn’t stop until she was in front of him, where she grabbed him by the collar, pulled him to her, and gave him a fierce kiss right on the lips.

He did not see that turn coming, but he let go, enjoying every bump and bounce on the road. Lowering his hand to her hip and kissing her back because there was no way he wasn’t going to participate. Threading his fingers through silky hair, he pulled her closer, angling her face.

When she pulled back they were both breathless.

“Does that answer your question?” Shimmering amber eyes gazed at him from under lowered lashes. A hint of a smile curled her upper lip.

“Not really.” He needed a real answer.

“Levi didn’t ask me to marry him. You were way off. We both were and thank God for that.”

“What? I don’t get it. Then who…”

Beau’s voice trailed off as a crazy and random thought came to him. No…

“Yes, he asked Jolette Marie to marry him in front of the entire bar filled with customers.
