Chapter 20

After I left my parents’ house, I stopped at the newsroom to run another background check on Tim Hammond. This time, however, I wasn’t looking for his criminal history.

I was looking for a way into his head.

I was the last bartender to clock in at five, which meant I’d be closing tonight. I stowed my purse in the cabinet, then rounded the bar to where Tim was scrubbing high tops with a wet towel.

“Hey, Tim.”

He gave me a cursory glance. “Hey.”

“Can I talk to you for a sec?”

He froze and swiveled toward me, forehead furrowed. “Okay.”

“So, listen, I—” My gaze perception kicking in, I paused. “Adrienne’s watching us, isn’t she?”

His eyes skipped toward Adrienne, and he let out an amused snort. “Like a vulture.”

I pointed over his shoulder toward the lounge. “Maybe we go over there?”

“Sure.” He tossed the towel onto the table and followed me into the lounge, where we would be out of earshot.

I spun to face him. “I should’ve said something yesterday, but we were so busy…” The sentence trailed off, and I waved my hands, dismissing my own defense. “That’s no excuse. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for saving my sister’s life.”

Tim’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Oh, that.” Laughing uncomfortably, he rubbed the back of his neck. “Blake did most of the work.”

“Dude, stop. You’re a hero.”

“Well, I don’t know about that.” He shrugged, a bashful smile lifting his lips. “Anyone would have done the same thing.”

“Anyone would not have done the same thing,” I protested. “Didn’t you see the crowd of people who were not doing the same thing?”

He tipped his head to one side as he considered. “That’s true.”

“See? Hero.” I grinned, hoping I wasn’t laying it on too thick. “You’re wasting your skills here.”

He let out a short laugh. “Aren’t we all?”

“Good point.” I shoved my hands into my pockets and rocked on my heels. “Is there anything I can do to repay the favor? Steal a bottle of liquor for you? Do all your side work tonight?” I leaned in and winked conspiratorially. “Take out a manager?”

His hazel eyes sparkled. “What if I wanted you to take out Blake?”

“Well, as you said, he did most of the work, so that would cancel out your request.”

“Ah, well.” He snapped his fingers in mock disappointment. “Worth a shot.”

“But if he steps out of line, let me know.” I gave him a lopsided smile to let him know I was joking. “I know a guy.”

Tim laughed again. “Nah, I’m kidding. He’s not the one I’d go after.”

“Who, then?” I wiggled my eyebrows at him. “I love a good bit of gossip.”

His expression went slack. “I’m surprised you have to ask after what happened to your sister.”

My smile slipped. “Luke?”

“The guy got your sister so drunk, she not only blacked out, but stopped breathing. What kind of person does that? And then he sat there and watched!” He shook his head in disgust, running a hand over his gelled hair. “Is she okay?”

“Yes, thanks.
