Chapter 14

Ace had never been kissed before.

Sure, he’d participated in kisses. But he’d always been the one to initiate them. A hazard of being the tallest guy in the room. It wasn’t often that a woman found herself in a position where she could lay one on him without a precursor.

Clearly, he’d deprived himself of something great by not orchestrating a scenario where a woman could take charge, because he became a huge fan as Sophia’s mouth claimed his.

And that was the extent of his brain’s ability to string a thought together. The kiss unfolded as she moved closer, still on her knees, still slightly above him and it didn’t take much for her to set his skin on fire.

Man, was she a hot kisser. Sophia took no prisoners, and he frankly couldn’t think of a better time to surrender to a woman. As if she’d sensed his hesitation fading, she shoved fingers through his hair, splaying them along his neck, urging him forward.

No more invitation needed than that. Ace touched her in kind, running the backs of his hands along her cheekbone, lifting her chin to slant his lips along hers at a deeper angle.

She tasted like sunshine and crisp fall days, and everything forbidden that he shouldn’t want and couldn’t stop himself from craving. Blood roaring through his veins, he lost himself in the sensations, funneling as much into this experience as he could before his conscience got wind of this.

And then it all crashed over him. What was he doing? This was not okay.

Wrenching himself free, he scuttled backward faster than a crab at high tide. “I’m sorry.”

“I’m not.” She tracked him with her gaze, disappointment filling her expression. “Don’t you dare say you weren’t into that kiss because I’ll call you a liar.”

Well, she should do that regardless. That would be the least of the nasty names she would be well within her rights to lob in his direction. But he wouldn’t lie to her about this. “I wanted to kiss you or I wouldn’t have.”

“Buuuut...?” Her eyebrows winged up in invitation for him to finish the statement.

“You’re tired, Sophia. Hurt. Scared. Trapped, most importantly. There are a lot of things swimming through your head right now that are impeding your judgment. I would rather shoot myself than take advantage of this situation.”

“So this is you being noble. Noted.”

The coolness in her tone said she didn’t quite believe the things coming out of his mouth, which rankled since every word was 100 percent true. It just wasn’t the whole truth. “I know you think you’re making an informed decision about how you want things to go between us, but trust me, this is not the time to be jumping into something we can’t take back.”

“Wow, I really freaked you out, didn’t I?” The wonder creeping over her face didn’t help matters.

What was he supposed to do, contradict her? Tell her he wasn’t so easy to spook, it was just that he drew a hard line at romancing a woman under false pretenses?

He tried again.
