Chapter Eight
It amazed Lily how quickly Kevin made a simple discussion over the breakfast table into reality.
They were on a private jet to Colorado by mid-afternoon and settled into their quiet cabin tucked into Rocky Mountain National Park near the town of Estes Park before the sun had time to set over the snow-tipped mountain peaks.
Lilyâs head was awhirl. Too much information and too much activity. FBI men were all about, securing the area and making sure the cabin was comfortable. Someone made a roaring fire in the fireplace, and the enticing smell of chili simmered on the stove.
Kevin had fawned over Abigail all day, making sure she was comfortable during the trip and that she lacked for nothing. He even spoiled her with an extra soda, once he got permission from Lily.
But even though Kevinâs attention was caught up with her daughter, he was not too busy to forget about Lily. When she was ushered from place to place, it was always Kevinâs big, gentle hand on her arm guiding her.
In fact, it seemed to be an unspoken rule among the agents that Lily was Kevinâs territory, for few of the men spoke to her or interacted with her, and then only in Kevinâs presence.
She didnât know how she felt about that. Everything was new and rushed.
And changed.
Especially where Kevin was concerned.
He was the same tender, considerate man he had always been, with his big green eyes streaming affection and compassion every time he looked at her. And yet, he was none of the things Lily thought he was. He was a fantasy sheâd created in her mind, and the truth hurt.
âAre you even a nurse?â she asked him when they had both settled back on the couch to eat the steaming chili and share a hot loaf of sourdough bread.
She knew there were other agents on the premises, circling the house and keeping lookout for any kind of danger, but Kevin was the only agent placed inside the cabin with her and Abigail. And she was certain that was no accident. Actually, if she was honest with herself, she was glad. At least she knew him. A little.
Kevin chuckled and shook his head. âI was wondering when you were going to get around to asking me that question.â
He took a tentative sip of chili off his spoon, then jerked back as the sauce evidently burned his lips. His spoon clattered into the bowl as he reached for his napkin with one hand and a cold glass of water with the other.
Lily couldnât help but laugh. She tore a piece of bread from the loaf and handed it to him. âTry this. Itâll work better than water to put out that fire on your tongue.â
He gave her a panicked, wide-eyed look and quickly took a large bite of bread, chewing slowly as his expression returned to normal. âHow did you know to do that?â
Lily shrugged. âA lot of dishes in the South are hotâeither temperature-wise or spicy. I think my mother must have taught me that bread trick.
